Chef Boutonne is a small market town with sufficient shops to cater
for one's general needs. Bars, cafés and restaurants
overlook the town square. In addition to the 2 supermarkets,
there are bustling weekly markets selling fresh local produce
both here and at the nearby towns of Melle and Lezay.
Chef Boutonne has several doctors and dentists who speak English,
for any medical emergencies.
The Poitou-Charentes region has many delights. Its varied landscape
is steeped in history and tradition, and the region has a warm
and exceptionally sunny climate. Visitors can explore picturesque
hilltop villages and medieval towns, Romanesque churches and
cathedrals, ancient abbeys, châteaux, museums and art
galleries.
Chateau Javarzay, in Chef Boutonne, is a beautiful little
Chateau which houses the Musee de La Coiffe. There is also
one of the traditional “Lavoirs” and the picturesque
source of the River Boutonne, close by.
The Eglise St Hilaire, up on the hill near the centre of the
town has weekly services, as do most of the other local churches.
The meandering rivers of the Charente region are surrounded
by beautiful countryside, sunflower fields, vineyards and
old buildings made out of the golden Charentaise stone with
red tiled roofs framed against the blue skyline.
